Dowsing, or the art of using the pendulum, is the process of locating tangible objects and revealing answers to intangible questions. Dowsing has been around for thousands of years and has been used in a wide variety of different applications. Traditionally, the most recognized application of dowsing has been for the location of underground water sources. This method of locating water remains the primary way in which underground water is located and drilled for today.

Some people may wonder just how dowsing works — it may be hard for some people to trust in the methods employed by the individual doing the dowsing. On a scientific level, there still seems to be some controversy as to how a pendulum, or dowsing rods, can actually locate items or give answers to specific questions. Many experiments have been done and continue to be performed to prove the validity of this ancient practice.

One such experiment was performed by an individual who was an operator of a Polygraph test or ‘lie detector machine’. He tested the electric response of plants to specific stimuli by placing a test end of the polygraph machine to one of the plant’s leaves. After giving the plant some water, he recorded the reaction of the plant on the Polygraph meter. The meter recorded a response similar to that of a person experiencing pleasure. This reaction was virtually immediate. He then had the thought of testing the reaction of the plant if he burned one of its leaves. The plant’s immediate response was that of a person experiencing pain. The most interesting about this part of the experiment, was that the plant responded to the thought of receiving a burn and did not ever actually receive the burn.

This experiment suggests that there is some level of consciousness in all living things. Or, at the very least, that there is an energetic response within all living things. If we go along with the idea that all living things have a consciousness, then we might suggest that based on the response of the plant in the experiment, all living things share a part of the same consciousness, or are interconnected by consciousness.

When testing for underground water, the dowser is simply picking-up the electric current created by the friction of the water as it passes through the rocks below the surface. The body acts as the receiver, and the pendulum or the dowsing rods act as the indicator or the meter of that electric current. In other words, the physical body is a big receiver of energetic or electrical frequencies. When the dowser holds the pendulum or dowsing rods, the tools become the meter, or indicator of the frequency felt or experienced by the physical body.

Accepting that we are all connected on an energetic level and understanding that the way to access this common energy is through the use of dowsing tools, form the foundation of what dowsing is all about. If all living things are interconnected in some way, and we, in turn participate in that interconnectedness, then it makes sense that we have access to anything we want. All we have to do is ask the right questions. This is the essential power of dowsing.

Recognizing that the physical body is a giant receiver is a powerful insight. The more we tune into the physical body and become aware of the impulses we have, the more we can actually go beyond using dowsing tools. When you allow yourself to be acutely sensitive and to feel those impulses, the more you begin to open up your intuitive self. This is the point at which a dowser becomes what is called a diviner — someone who can access the Divine.

Dowsing is something anyone can do — it is a process that can easily be learned and mastered with a little practice. The more you practice, the more your skills improve and the clearer you become. The more you trust the response that you get with your dowsing tools, the more success you will have with dowsing.

Taking an introductory class on dowsing is probably the best way to get started. Learning from an experienced dowser will help you pick-up some of the important tricks of the trade that will make it easier for you to get clear responses in a short period of time.
